“I’ve been experiencing high stress levels ever since I transferred to a different branch of the bank I work at and my commute doubled in length. What natural remedies are there for stress?”
Dr. Whimsy: Stress is one of the most common reasons people come to see me at Erewhon. In addition to a stress reduction exercise program that incorporates deep breathing, like yoga, and a commitment to a regular exercise program, there are several supplements that you might find helpful. For overall health and relaxation we often recommend Calm Magnesium powder by Natural Vitality. This product can be taken before bed and it helps relax your muscles while quieting the mind, which helps you get a good night’s sleep. I also like the B Complex from Thorne. This B Complex contains no fillers (like Magnesium stearate), and no cyanide (a common ingredient found in lower-quality forms of B 12). Furthermore, the B vitamins and folic acid in Thorne B Complex are in their active form—meaning that they do not need to be further processed by the liver in order to go to work healing the adrenals and helping to relieve stress.
GABA is a major neurotransmitter and a common supplement for stress. Thorne has an excellent product called “PharmaGABA” that is pharmaceutical grade and is found to be highly absorbable. Also, don’t forget to consider adaptogenic herbs like Rhodiola rosea, Siberian ginseng (Eleuthereococcus senticosus), Ashwaggandha (Withania somnifera), and Panax ginseng. These herbs can be tonifying and healing to the adrenals (especially in people who are feeling exhausted and overwhelmed). These herbs are available as blends in two products I recommend quite often: Adrenal Health by Gaia Herbs and Stress Response by Gaia Herbs.
